Husband and Wife Golf

If you and your spouse are looking for a place to play golf this winter, check out one of the meccas of women's golf, the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. The club has a 20-plus year history of involvement with women's golf as the site of the original Colgate Winners Circle event, which evolved into one of the LPGA's four major tournaments in the late 1980s.

Mission Hills has an advantage over most other facilities because of its 54 holes. "We have a Women's Day and a Men's Day each week and simply rotate courses. We have yet to face a tee-time issue," says general manager Nancy Aaronson. The courses are set up from a woman's as well as a man's point of view. "We treat the woman's perspective as seriously as a man who hits the long ball," she says.

Women are accepted as equal members with men, and single women are also welcome to join. This women's-friendly club has 400 active women members, dozens of them low handicappers. With more younger women getting into the game, "we are seeing more 30-year-olds join, which was unheard of in the past," says Jane Comelli, co-chair of the membership committee.

Both the husband and wife are full members of the club, says Jerry Gelinas, ClubCorp senior vice president of marketing. While Saturday morning has traditionally been the men's time to play, "we allow a couple to designate which individual from a membership to play on Saturday morning," he says.
